What Are the Foundations of an Inclusive Classroom?
Speaker: We try to be really proactive in our training and working with teachers on how to really set up your classroom in a way that is inclusive and any child who walks in the door is going to get really high quality services. At the beginning of the year, we’re really proactive about how we set up the room, some of the things that are at the bottom of the pyramid.
When we think about teaching, we think about a pyramid. At the bottom is the foundation and we’re really looking at relationships and environment. At the beginning of the year and throughout the year we try to really work on strengthening those areas. We want to set up a no-fail environment for the kids, so any child can walk into this room. They don’t need to know a lot of English skills. They don’t need to know how to share, how to take turns at first in order to be successful. We’ll teach those things later. We’ll be really intentional about how we teach kids, how to be in this environment.
