Keep Children Safe Using Active Supervision

Active Supervision in Early Childhood Programs is now available on the Individualized Professional Development (iPD) Portfolio. This two-part course will help you learn and implement the six strategies of active supervision. Receive 0.2 continuing education units (CEUs) or two contact hours for completing the course.

Keeping children safe is a top priority for all Head Start programs. Active supervision is the most effective strategy for creating a safe environment and preventing injuries in young children. It transforms supervision from a passive approach to an active skill.

Programs should use a systematic approach to ensure that everyone in the program monitors children using active supervision. A systematic approach includes staff training in active supervision and attention management. It also establishes redundant strategies to ensure no child is left unattended, and it addresses staff wellness so that staff have the energy and morale to supervise effectively.
